2009 Toyota Surfrider Camry Hybrid CNG

Toyota also teamed with Street Image to further modify the Camry Hybrid CNG Show Car for the 2009 SEMA Show. The exterior of the vehicle was given a sportier concept look with the installation of an aggressive body kit featuring a custom front grill and unique rear bumper that covers the tail pipe and exhaust system. 2009 Toyota Matrix

Walkaround
The 2009 Toyota Matrix is just slightly larger than its predecessor though it looks significantly larger. It's a fraction of an inch longer and lower than the previous model.

Three factors add to its visual size: First, the nose is sleeker, with lights that more closely parallel the Camry, S and XRS models have a deeper chin than before, and the grille opening sweeps cleanly up and outboard on the hood, becoming the base of the windshield pillar. The second contributor is the inch-wider rear track which carries more visual weight further aft. Finally, the C-pillar (the roof support behind the back door) is very thick and the side window has been removed, with just a sliver of curved glass at the end, leading into the hatch glass.

The longer, lower front end of S and XRS models employs outer black nacelles for fog lamp housings and the center section is dark to the bottom for a more aggressive look. The S and XRS also have different lower trim all around the body and the dark material that shows on the seams between the panels and main bodywork gives a hint of the add-on look, a situation more pronounced on light-color cars.

In profile the front side windows resemble a wine glass on its side; the upper side curved along its length and the lower side scoops downward, for a good view of the mirror without the mirror blocking any forward or side vision, and then begins the taper upward to the rear. Painted mirrors and door handles, lack of any side moldings, and just two pieces of glass keep visual clutter to a minimum.

Seventeen-inch wheels make the best of big wheel wells while the rear spoiler serves as a punctuation point to an otherwise near-hemispherical rear end, and auxiliary sunshade for rear-seat riders.

It's no stretch to consider Matrix the wagon or hatchback version of the Corolla, indeed the official name is Corolla Matrix. The Corolla is about seven inches longer and half that lower, excepting headroom has larger interior dimensions but a smaller trunk. The Matrix hatchback eases loading awkward objects, the upright stance gives a slightly better view of traffic, and it offers all-wheel drive and a rear wiper for inclement weather. Expect a Matirx to cost about $1,000 more than a similarly equipped Corolla.

Interior
Inside, however, any relation to a Corolla vanishes at the first glimpse of the dash, the Matrix trading conservative for a more stylish look with sweeping metal-look surfaces on both sides of the instrument cluster. Two large omni-directional vents peer out the top like bug eyes and frame the gauges that include round dials for speed and engine revs and an oblong unit for ancillary information.

At this price point the materials include fabric upholstery and door panels, with plastic on trim pieces such as lower doors. It doesn't look cheap or like this is where the money was saved, and all the switchgear has a quality feel to it. Colors carry a fire theme, with either Ash (light gray) or Charcoal (very dark gray) to choose from. A variety of storage spaces and sizes can be found within driver's reach, and most have a nonskid, quieting rubber mat on the bottom, a big improvement over the slippery surface that came standard on the previous-generation Matrix.

Manually adjusted front buckets are well-placed for tall driver headroom and short driver visibility, and provide good support for the length of time it takes to burn a tank of gas, which is a long time. The wheel tilts and telescopes but the latter's travel is limited and, with the clutch pedal much closer than the brake pedal, may require some minor driver adaptation.

The rear bench seat is a 60/40 split with the narrow part behind the driver where it should be, and easily folds down unless the front seat is far rearward.

Despite the loss of a half-inch in rated headroom and four inches in hip room because of measurement standards, the rear seat is generally bigger than before and we put a pair of 6-foot-3-inch riders back there with head clearance. There are three belts, used simultaneously only by kids and waif-like models, and the rear-seat floor is almost flat with only a slight rise up to the console.

The illuminated gauges are easy to see regardless of conditions, and forward viewing is good unless you need to actually see the hood to gauge where it is. Direct rear view isn't bad either with no big central headrest in the way, but your first head turn to check a rear quarter lane change will show just how big those C-pillars are.

Three-ring climate controls deliver air where and when you want it without excessive fan noise; AC is standard. Primary operating controls are on steering column stalks, with less-frequent items like the optional stability control defeat on the dash; the shifter (automatic or manual) rides on a perch off the lower dash, while a conventional handbrake is in the console.

New for 2008 is an entry-level navigation option (S, XRS only) that does not use voice-recognition or Bluetooth. However, it does voice guidance, offers XM real-time traffic (for subscribers), a clear 7-inch screen, and the intuitive operation set by Lexus. Unfortunately, there is only so much space in the dash, so you can not get the navigation system and the high-level JBL sound system in the same car.

Matrix has nearly 20 cubic feet of cargo area behind the rear seats, with some small bins underneath the floor; if you want to hide cargo from view there's an optional tonneau you attach at the corners. The floor (and rear seatback) has plastic runners, there are tie-down rings, and the right front-seat backrest folds flat for long items or a place to work the laptop on break.

Review Summary & Specifications
The Toyota Matrix provides the economy-minded pricing and operation of a compact car with the practicality of a hatch. All-wheel drive is available, an important option for those who need it that not all competitors offer. One never feels something is missing or left out, especially with the addition of a navigation system, and the new styling won't be dated before the next version of Windows or iPhone.

PHOENIX's Power MR2

Although the MR2 (SW20) is known as a high performance machine with its characteristics of a mid engine, rear-wheel drive layout, but retains a lot of weak points. This well balanced MR2 was built by Phoenixfs Power with speed and stability in mind. The owner wanted to try a variety of engine setups by switching between numerous turbos and ECU settings. This time the motor was mated with a T04R turbine that outputs 620 horses.

Full throttle pulls with a secure rear end!!
Let's face it; driving an MR2 is not my thing...MR2s have a distinct way of handling because of its midship engine layout and specially the high powered ones are very difficult to master.
However, this 600 horsepower MR2 is built very well. The power overflows from 5000 rpms and on, but the rear end stays very stable even at 3rd gear full throttle pulls. The traction is amazing on this car. Although I could only test it up to 5th gear at full throttle because of the rain, this car remained stable all the time.
The handling feeling is plentiful and very calm. This is because of the great suspension setting.
All the tuned MR2s in the past were sufficient in terms of power but lacked a good suspension setup. This car is not the case. The tuning has evolved. After driving this car, I now understand why the owner is so passionate about it.

The 2.2L bored and stroked 3S-GT with a fully tuned head accompanied with a T04R turbine is good for 620hp @ 1.8bar!
ENGINE
3S-GT 2.2L 618hp [full boost 1.8km/cm (25.6psi)] / Ported Bored cylinders/ Custom Camshaft (IN:272-11.5mm EX:280-11.5mm) / Valve springs for high lift / Titanium Retainers / Valve Lifters / HKS Head Gasket(1.2mm) / Custom Forged Pistons (87mm) / H-beam Connecting Rods / Custom Crankshaft for 5F / HKS T04 / Apexi Racing Wastegate / Custom Exhaust Manifold(48.6mm) / Custom Exhaust System ( Mid-section: 80mm Tail-section: 115mm*2) / HKS Power Flow Intake / Custom Intercooler (fit in the trunk) / Intake Piping (IN:80mm / OUT:90mm) / Infiniti 90mm Throttle Body / 16 plate Oil Cooler / Bosch Fuel Pump x2 / HKS Fuel Rail / SaRD Fuel Pressure Regulator / Blitz Injectors 1000cc x4 / NGK IRIWAY #8 / Apexi Power FC / Custom C-type Twin-Plate Clutch / 5-speed Cross Geared Transmission / Shift Cable / TRD LSD / Custom 4.5 final gear

ENGINE
In the bottom end was stuffed with custom forged pistons, H-beam connecting rods, and a custom crankshaft made for the 5F. The 2163cc displacement comes from the 87mm (3.425") bore and 91mm stroke. The head assembly is all Phoenix Powers original parts, and the intercooler was moved to the trunk.

TURBOCHAGER
The T04R was installed just for this article coverage. This turbo is good for 618ps (609hp) and 56kgm (405lb-ft) of torque all controlled by the Apexi Power FC. On the previous setup, the owner of this MR2 had a T51R SPL BB with an FCon Vpro that produced 777ps / 71kgm (766hp / 513lb-ft) with max boost 2.5kg/cm² (35.56psi).

CAMSHAFTS
The custom camshafts have 272 degree duration with 11.5mm lift on the intake side and 282 degree duration with 11.5mm lift on the exhaust side. To install these camshafts, some work on the cylinder head was necessary. Also, the valve springs, the retainers, and the lifters were also customized and installed just for these camshafts.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER
The custom catalytic converter contains a 150 metal honeycomb cells. For this vehicle, the catalytic converter (on the right on the picture) was welded to the exhaust system without its case (on the left on the picture).

THROTTLE BODY
Due to more power and response at the mid to high RPM, an Infiniti 90mm throttle body was installed. The intake piping is 80mm (IN) and 90mm (OUT).

EXHAUST SYSTEM
The exhaust is all custom: 85mm main section and a 115mm tip. The exhaust splits into two, and the muffler looks very mean from the rear. The 16 row oil cooler rests beneath the license plate.

SUSPENSION
The custom suspension kit was based off Ohlins components, requiring special modifications to make them fit on the MR2. Using a set of DR21 kg/mm springs, this amazing setup provides great traction, handling, and ride quality. The front lower control arm, the tension rods, the tie rod ends, the rear lower arm, the torque control arm are custom components too.

BRAKES
These brakes were fabricated to match the vehicle power output. The front stock brake rotors and calipers were adopted from a JZA80 4-pot system. Along with a set of brake pads from Image, this combination produces absolute braking power and control.

INTERIOR PARTS
TRD 320km/h Full-Scale Speed Meter / Apexi Tachometer & Boost Gauge / Trust Water Temp Gauge, Oil Temp Gauge, Oil Pressure Gauge, Fuel Pressure Gauge, Exhaust Temp Gauge / Custom Roll Cage / Recaro SR x2 / Sabelt 4-point seatbelt harness / atc Steering Wheel / Blitz Dual SBC / Apexi Rev Speed meter

INSTRUMENT PANEL
The stock cluster was replaced with a TRD unit good for 300km/h and next to it an Apexi 10,000RPM Tachometer was installed. The three gauges (boost, oil temp, and ex. temp) were mounted on the dashboard while the other three gauges (oil press, water temp, and fuel press.) were mounted on the center console.

BOOST CONTROLLER
Although the boost can be regulated with the Apexi Power FC, they installed a Blitz Dual SBC because of its various programmable boost settings. Next to the Blitz Dual SBC, Apexi Rev/Speed meter with multi-functions (speed meter, RPM, 0-400km/h, and so on) was mounted.

EXTERIOR
Custom Front Bumper Spoiler with Fixed Headlight Kit (lip spoiler is adjustable) / Side Skirt with flat board / Rear Bumper Spoiler / Engine Hood Scoop / Trunk Air Duct / Custom Rear Wing / Advan Neova (Front: 215/40-17, Rear: 255/35-18) / BBS (Front: 7J+35, Rear: 9J+48)

REAR
The custom engine hood scoop is designed to extract the hot air out of the engine room. The custom trunk air duct is designed to inject the cold air into the trunk where the intercooler sits. The whole system was not only designed for functional purposes, but also for appearance.

FRONT
The custom front bumper spoiler with fixed headlight kit gives the car that distinct look. The lip spoiler is adjustable for any given condition. The Border hood with air ducts pulls the air through the radiator and out to the top of the body.
